Swimming Lessons

 Isaac pool 1

Today I was off work again, and I took Isaac to his swimming lesson at the local YMCA.  Isaac is definitely a beginner.  He had swimming lessons when he was about 3 years old, but at the time he was a little scared, and didn’t really take to it.  Now that he is older, he is more motivated and eager to take risks.  He has such a great time.

Jonny made friends with another little boy whose sister is in the swim class with Isaac.  The two of them played with toys and talked the entire time.  I am hoping that watching Isaac learn to swim will motivate Jonathan to participate in his preschool swim class this coming year (last year he refused to even get in the water!)  Ben loved looking at the kids and the water, but fell asleep halfway through the class.  He did get splashed a little at the beginning but didn’t seem to mind it at all.  I think he might enjoy an infant swim class.

At the end of the class Isaac was very reluctant to get out of the pool.  In the photo below we are getting ready to leave.  Note how close Jonny is to the edge of the pool.  For a kid who is supposed to be scared to get in the water, he did that alot today.

Before we left, Isaac jumped into the water from the side of the pool twice all by himself!  I was so proud.

Hey Karen, Jacob and Madeline are taking swimming classes also. Both are in the beginners class . The classes are at the centre of excellance and they have two pools. Jacob seems to be very close to swimming freestyle . He stays underwater very well and I think I finally got something Jacob is interested. Madeline is trying but she rather dancing or singing classes.

Well at least Jacob has found something that he can do better than Madeline. Good for him. I am happy to see that Isaac is so much more comfortable in the water.

I am glad to hear that Jacob loves swimming so much. Our YMCA also has 2 pools. It’s actually not a bad facility for a small town.
Isaac’s class only runs for another week, but we think we will sign him up again for at least one other session this summer. We can also continue with classes through the fall and winter since the pools are indoors.

Over here in UK they start babies off in swimming pools from about 2-3 months, Toby my nephew is 18 months and goes swimming every thursday, unfortunately we are not allowed to take photos of children in the swimming pools here 😦 No cameras are allowed for fear of the photos getting into the wrong hands on the internet.

  5. Karen Says:

I think our YMCA doesn’t let babies start until 6 months, so technically I suppose we can sign Ben up for classes. I was holding off until he had good enough head and upper body control (which he does now). I am not sure if they have a no-photo policy at our YMCA. I never thought to ask! It’s so sad that one has to worry about inappropriate photo use that one can’t take pictures of one’s own child having a good time.

It is really sad that we have to think about these things, that we can’t capture and share our kids’ precious moments without worrying who might see them in a different way.
