An Ear Infection and Two Shots

Sick Isaac

As I mentioned before, Isaac got an ear infection on Christmas Eve.  It started in the right ear, but the left quickly became infected too.  He was on Augmentin for 2 days, but still awoke the day after Christmas with a fever and ear pain.  We took him to the pediatrician yesterday morning.  She took a look at his ears, and decided to give him a very strong antibiotic: one called Rocephin.  Unfortunately, Rocephin only comes in IM or IV forms, and that means a shot.  In Isaac’s case it meant two shots since the dose was too large to give in just one injection.

I told Isaac that he would get a shot, but he either didn’t hear me or didn’t believe me – he seemed to take the news very well.  That is, until the nurse actually came in with the needles.  He fought tooth and nail, and was very sad afterwards.  I felt so sorry for him.

He seems to be doing much better since then; no more fevers and he is not waking up screaming in the middle of the night.  He still has to finish the course of Augmentin.  We are trying to have him eat lots of yogurt to prevent him from getting diarrhea.  He has been quite chipper today from what Mark says, and feels well enough to play plenty of video games.   Hopefully he won’t need any more shots.
